July 15 : The ICYM Ferar unit conducted an initiative named "PELYACHO HUSKO" (a cloth collection drive) from June 4-26, 2024. This initiative aimed to collect gently used clothing from parishioners to distribute to those in need. The main objectives were to support underprivileged families by providing necessary clothing, to promote a sense of volunteerism among youth, and to raise awareness about the importance of recycling and donating clothes.
Planning and Preparation:
The initiative was promoted through social media campaigns (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) and regular announcements made after mass. Collection boxes were placed in front of the mini hall from morning until 4:30 PM. The clothes were segregated daily by ICYM members, ensuring proper handling and storage of items.
Sorting and Packing:
The collected clothes were sorted into categories (men, women, children) and by type (casual, outerwear, saree, etc.). Each item was inspected for quality, and unsuitable items were either discarded or recycled.
Distribution:
The donation event was held on June 27. Clothes were distributed through partnerships with various charities:
1. The first set of clothes was donated to Jeevan Asha Trust, an old age home in Shirva.
2. The second set was donated to Suraksha Seva Ashram in Karkala.
3. The final set was donated to SnehaSadan St. Camillus Care Home in Mangalore.
The ICYM Clothes Drive Initiative was a resounding success, surpassing their initial goals and significantly impacting the community. The dedication of their volunteers and the generosity of their donors were crucial to this success. They look forward to continuing this initiative in the future, with plans to expand and improve based on the lessons learned this year.
